Taming the Toad
by Beth Duewel

I’m not certain, but I think if I looked up the definition of the word “zoo” our family name might be found right after the words wild and untamable. Include a quick inventory of our various pets and furry friends (dust bunnies not included), and I’m sure you would agree—the word “zoo” just sort of fits.

Today my daughter, or should I say—miniature zoo keeper—fished a water frog from our small pond in hopes of “teaching it lots of tricks.” I could see her frustration mounting as she commanded the frog...[read more]

Wandering Through The Wilderness

To My Dear Friends:

I spend a great deal of my time wandering. Wandering around the frozen-foods section. Wandering through my drawer for a matching pair of socks. And then wandering to the fridge while I wonder what to make for supper so my ears don’t have to hear those two little words: “Meatloaf again?”

I don’t know why my children complain? I mean, if the Israelites can wander for forty years, satisfied by nothing but sweetness from Heaven—surely a little meatloaf repeats won’t hurt. But, I guess I need to cut them some slack. Even the Israelites wore weary of the limited menu and aimless amble. Will the laundry ever get done?

There are a lot of days I tire of my wandering and fall flat on my back into an unmade bed. My list longer. My laundry undone. Will I ever see the bottom of the hamper or is it a possible porthole to China. Hmmm.

There is an old hymn that describes my state. “Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Take my heart, oh, take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.”  Whether from complete exhaustion or sheer distraction, I feel the pull to wander aimlessly in the wilderness of life. That’s why I need to have a tuned ear to the One who calls me out.

I am so excited to invite you Out of the Wilderness with me. On a journey full of chuckles, sharing, and…yes…more “wonderings.” I can’t wait to see what God is going to do through this newsletter. My hope is that it gives you glimpses of God’s goodness as we initiate a closer relationship with Him.

Now it's 4:00 and time to make supper. On second thought, I wonder if there’s any left over meatloaf from last night? Smile.

I just wanted to spend a minute reveling in the sensational women I know. My daughter Brittany is truly a gift and a young woman with incredible courage and faith. And, then, there's Rhonda Rhea who is my writing mentor. Her encouragement, insight and humor makes doing what I do for God a joy.

Thank you, ladies, for your gifts to me and to God!
