Reflections On Being A Mom
by Beth Duewel

When my husband wondered if I would like to convert our dining room into a home office I was sooo up for it. Instead of the dungeons of the basement or the tree-house heights of a bedroom, I could type away in the dining room—the hub of the household. What a great idea!!!

The revamping didn’t take long. Take a table to the basement, stash the extras in the bottom of an unused cabinet, face the computer towards the light of day, and accomplish great things in my new place. Seemed like a super start to me.

Lets see now, what was the word that I oh, so flippantly used to describe my new office space? Oh yes…HUB. According to my dictionary the word hub is all inclusive meaning center, focal point, and in celebration of the nature in which I used it: “The heart of it all.” How wonderful…how complete…how close to the family…uhhh…wait a minute?!?

And so I discover “thinking" rather difficult...[read more]

Praise be to God - 1 Peter 1:3

Hello dear friends, I have missed you…

There are a list of things that announce the break through of Spring: Florescent green grass,
purple-crested crocuses, spring peeps (those tiny frogs that make huge noises), and last but not least…Poison Ivy?

My youngest daughter woke up this week with rosy cheeks and the rest is Benadryl history. Tell me, does poison ivy ever die? Our ground here in the north is still covered with frost laden soil. But before we can mouth the word SPRING, one of our family always comes in contact with the horrible stuff. I’m sure many of you can relate.

Except, many years ago (let’s not say how many), we didn’t have any of this new fangled clear medication. Oh no. A rash of poison anything would leave you Calamine dipped—so pink and pretty.

In first grade my mom sent me to school a speckled mess. I think I gleefully rolled down an ivy-covered hill or something. Anyway, my itching became such a distraction in the classroom that Mrs. Stricker (and she didn’t get that name on accident), threatened to send me to the hall if I didn’t “stop that crazy scratchin.”

That was it.

The more I tried not to rub and wiggle, the more I just HAD to. If I remember correctly, I politely wiggled myself to the hallway. Ahh sweet relief.

Isn’t it amazing though, how this psychological phenomenon unfolds? It always seems that when we are told NOT to do something we feel compelled to do it. Even if the reprimand is for our own good.

The amazing grace of it all is that our rebellion is no surprise to God. I, along with my children, am still learning lessons about God’s supernaturally designed rules and desires for my life. Many of my offenses have left a poisonous trail in my heart that could only find relief through Jesus, Christ, God’s Son. His death and resurrection provided sweet relief for my sin-filled condition.

So don’t worry. If you’re like me and prone to both sin AND Poison Ivy: keep reading God’s word and stay away from those three-leafed vines. Or is it five-leafed?!? Smile.

Blessings & Belly Laughs,

Beth Duewel
